Historical Research for Undergraduates at UNA

Selecting a Research Topic

If you're new to research, simply selecting a topic can be an anxiety-inducing process. Historians and other veteran researchers often already know enough about their research interests that the topic itself isn't even a question. As a student new to academic research, selecting a topic for a term paper or research project is only the beginning. Nevertheless, it's an important first step, so let's look at some helpful tips when it comes to selecting a topic.

  • Choose a topic you're interested in
    • It may seem obvious like an obvious point, but people who are new to research often have difficulty framing questions
  • Choose a topic specific enough to be addressed within the given timeframe
  • Read entries from scholarly reference works on your topic
