Mane Read 2024: Community

Mane Read 2024: Community

Welcome to this year’s revamped communal reading program here at UNA. Back in 2019, we began our shared reading with a program called One Book. That first year we explored the intersections between race and the criminal justice system with Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy and over the next four years, we’ve continued to explore the experiences of those like and unlike us in Educated, Grace Will Lead Us Home, The Cooking Gene, and Disability Visibility. Each of these books challenged our perceptions of different communities and the individuals that make up those communities.

As part of an initiative to create more opportunities for conversation and increase access to relevant reading materials, we’ve chosen to move away from a traditional book for this year’s shared reading. One theme that all the One Book selections share is community, and so this year’s Mane Read will explore the idea of community, both on and off-campus.

In this LibGuide, you’ll find a list of core readings designed to promote thinking about music communities, college communities, and virtual communities. Each reading is a starting point for conversation, and you are welcome to read a little or read a lot. All we ask is that you read, share, and start talking with your community.

Enjoy!
