Using Electronic Resources Appropriately : Home

This guide provides information about the appropriate use of library-provided electronic resources.

Collier Library and Information Services provides access to a broad range of electronic resources, including databases, electronic books, electronic journals, and streaming videos.  Use of these resources is generally restricted to current UNA students, faculty, staff, and walk-in users physically present in the library. The use of each resource is governed by copyright laws as well as the license agreement between UNA and the resource provider.

The following activities are generally prohibited by existing license agreements:

  • Commercial Use: Our resources are licensed to use for academic/research usage. They are not to be used for commercial use.

  • Excessive/Systematic Download: Users are not allowed to download an excessive amount of the content from a resource or use computer programs that systematically download content.

  • Sharing Resource Content: The sharing of content is generally limited to sharing with other UNA users.

  • Posting Content Online: Content  should not be posted on a public website. When sharing content with students through Canvas, please post links to the content rather than a PDF/other file.  Faculty can consult their library liaisons for assistance or if they have questions. Please be aware that posting links also helps in giving us more accurate usage information for our electronic resources. A driving factor behind decisions to keep a resource is the cost per use. If a faculty members posts a PDF version of an article, only one "use" (the download by the professor) is counted - no matter how many students access that PDF. On the other hand, if a link is posted instead, a "use" is counted each and every time a student accesses the article.
  • Sharing Login Information: Users should not share their account IDs and passwords with others.

The terms and conditions for an electronic resource are generally available through a link on the resource site. These links are often located in the header or footer of the webpage. If you have questions about the use of a product, you are encouraged to review these terms or ask your library liaison for assistance.
