Library Materials Purchase Request: Streaming Media for Course Use

Faculty use of streaming media has been increasing in recent years. The library supports this use in a variety of ways - subscribing to streaming audio and/or video packages, purchasing perpetual access to individual titles and packages, and purchasing temporary (usually 1-year) licenses for titles.

Please note, that licensing feature films, especially blockbuster titles, is sometimes impossible. However, we have agreements in place with two vendors that sell select feature films licenses to academic libraries. More information about these vendors is included in the "Licensing Individual Films" box below.

Streaming Video Subscription Packages

The streaming video packages listed below are subscription packages that come with unlimited simultaneous user access to all titles included in the package.

Purchased Collections

The  streaming video packages listed below were purchased in perpetuity and support unlimited simultaneous users. The library also occasionally buys individual videos on other platforms. Records for these titles are available in the library's online catalog.

Licensing Individual Films

Kanopy

Kanopy offers thousands of streaming videos, including many feature films, that can be licensed individually. Beginning August 2021, we offer mediated access to this platform. With the mediated access, faculty members can request that the library license a specific film for use by one (or more) of their classes. When faculty use the film request form in Kanopy, library staff will first check to see if the title is available in any of our existing subscription products. If it is, a link to the content will be sent to the requesting faculty member. If it is not, the request will be approved and the film will be activated on the Kanopy platform. This will generally occur within two business days of the submission of the request.  See the "Requesting a Title in Kanopy" file below for instructions and screen shots on requesting a title.  If the title you want to use is already licensed, please email collectiondevelopment@una.edu to verify that the existing license does not expire before you need it for your class. If it is scheduled to expire, the library will ask Kanopy to renew the license.  Please note that select Kanopy titles cannot be accessed from outside the U.S.

Swank

Swank is a vendor we primarily use for licensing feature films. Faculty can create an "Instructor" login in Swank which will allow them to search the full Swank catalog and request that the library license films. The information page for those films already licensed by the library will show the expiration date of the current license. The library will reach out to faculty members in advance of the license expiration date to determine if the license for the film needs to be renewed. See the "Swank Digital Campus Title Request" file below for instructions on requesting a film license. Please note that Swank titles cannot be streamed from outside the U.S.
